When it’s hot outside, nobody wants to heat up their kitchen!
Summertime is all about the grill and keeping the heat outside where it belongs – plus nothing says summer like sunshine, a good dose of water (be it sprinklers, pool, or the beach), and the smokey aroma of something delicious being cooked up over a bed of coals…
During the long days of winter, we dream about firing up our grill and creating easy meals outdoors. Now that summer is officially here we like to challenge ourselves to grill as many meals as possible. Think that means we’re overindulging in greasy burgers and brats? Think again!
If all you grill is meat, you’re doing it wrong.
From veggie burgers to veggie dogs, there are lots of options for grilling on plant-based diets if you want a “meat substitute.” But we’re not here to talk to you about fake meat… this post is all about our favorite thing: real, whole food vegetables, cooked on the grill. But not just any vegetables – frozen vegetables like Tommy’s Superfoods.
You heard us right, grilling frozen vegetables is tasty, healthy, easy, and, yes, possible!
Why Grill Frozen Vegetables: 5 Reasons
Too many people overlook frozen veggies when planning summer meals and that’s a mistake!
The frozen food aisle has tons of options. You can mix and match whatever veggies you want to go with anything else on your plate – or to create an amazing 100% plant-based meal. Buying frozen also saves time, especially with our products! Tommy’s veggies are pre-prepared and lightly seasoned – all you have to do is heat and eat!
We know we don’t have to tell you why frozen rocks. You wouldn’t be here if you didn’t already know how tasty, and fresher than fresh frozen vegetables are. So why grill them? Grilling up vegetables isn’t just tasty, healthy, easy – it’s fun too!
There are plenty of reasons to get out to your grill this summer, so if you want to give grilled frozen veggies a try, we’ve got you covered. Check out Tommy’s tips on grilling the perfect veggies and why it rocks, below.
1. Grilling frozen vegetables is healthy!
Of course, everyone knows that vegetables are healthy and good for you. But did you know that grilling veggies is actually a healthier way to cook them?
Cooking on the grill produces a lot less fat than using the stove top. It also helps vegetables retain more of their vitamins and minerals. That’s great news for frozen veggie eaters! Frozen vegetables, like Tommy’s products, are harvested at peak freshness. So, grilling them means they have less fat, and more nutrients than cooking fresh veggies on the stove.
Grilled frozen vegetables won’t lose any flavor or nutrients from farm to freezer, to grill, to plate!
2. Grilling frozen vegetables gets you outside!
Going out to grill vegetables is a great way to spend some time outside. Sure you could roast your vegetables in the oven or saute them on the stove top, but why do that when you can cook them in the great outdoors?
Whether it’s a pool party, a Fourth of July barbecue, or just a Friday night, everyone loves a Summer cookout! Get your friends and family to eat more veggies at your next outdoor gathering over flame-roasted vegetables. Coming together around food will really give you some sweet memories of Summer days.
3. Grilling frozen vegetables is easy!
Grilling frozen vegetables is a quick way to add some color and healthy options to your plate. Cooking on the grill takes less time than roasting or pan frying your veggies in the kitchen.
Tommy’s makes it even easier with pre-peeled and pre-seasoned veggies! When you start with Tommy’s there’s no need to peel, slice, or spice. Just pop your favorites in a tinfoil pouch stick them on the grill.
And the best part? No cleanup in the kitchen!
4. There’s lots of options!
Grilling is a great option for a variety of foods and that delicious charbroiled flavor goes with just about everything.
Grocery stores provide a wide variety of frozen vegetable options, from asparagus to zucchini, that will taste great grilled. There are also a lot of different ways to prepare frozen vegetables for grilling: you can cook it as-is or your vegetables can be seasoned or marinated, put on skewers straight on the grill or in a packet of tin foil.
Whether you want to add tofu, seafood, or keep to an all veggie meal, grilling is the way to go.
5. Grilling frozen vegetables contributes to a healthy lifestyle!
It’s important to eat vegetables at least three times per day. Because grilling cooks them so quickly (and with little cleanup), adding veggies to your plate is easy.
Using pre-seasoned, pre-peeled frozen vegetable medleys like Tommy’s can shave off even more time. Starting a healthy lifestyle starts with baby steps, and sometimes all it takes is firing up the grill to start a new habit you’ll thank yourself for later.
How to Grill Frozen Vegetables
So now that you know the why, let’s talk about the how!
Cook in Tinfoil
Want throw some veggies on the grill in a second? Tin foil to the rescue!
All you need for perfect grilled vegetables is tin foil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), and, of course, whatever Tommy’s vegetables you want!
- Simply pop the frozen veggies into the tin foil with a little bit of the EVOO.
- Place on the grill and cook according to the size of your vegetables.
- If you’re worried about sticking or charing, make sure the flames on your grill are not too high and either stir or flip the vegetables part way through cooking.
- Serve and enjoy! Frozen vegetables cook pretty quick, so you’ll be able to enjoy them in no time flat.
If you want to skip the tin foil, try using a skillet or vegetable basket instead.
