Here at Tommy’s Superfoods we sometimes get asked why we care so much about making sure our frozen vegetable medleys are non-GMO. Honestly, we wouldn’t want it any other way.
The GMO vs Non-GMO Question
The primary concern we have about the increasing use of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) in the United States is if they are 100% safe for our children and families to eat. We firmly believe that question has not be sufficiently answered with data-driven scientific testing and proof.
Just in case you’re new to learning about the GMOs debate, it’s important to know that what we are talking about is genetic matter that has been genetically engineered and artificially manipulated in a laboratory. This relatively new process creates animal, plant, bacteria and viral genes that would not naturally occur using traditional breeding methods or in nature. One very commercially popular use of GMOs is in the creation of plants that are resistant to powerful chemical herbicides and insecticides. We disagree with this practice as not only does it damage the surrounding soil, waterway, animals and insects but it also results in a plant that will be used for animal or human food that has been doused in cancer-causing chemicals. It’s not a funny joke when people refer to GMO foods as “Frankenfoods” – in fact, we think it’s kind of scary!
For most consumers, it is very difficult to stay in-the-know about which foods might have GMOs and the list of high-risk / low-risk crops and ingredients that contain genetically modified matter is always changing. Organizations such as the Non-GMO Project work hard to maintain current lists of GMO ingredients and conduct third-party Non-GMO verification for food producers and manufactures, but the giant corporations who make enormous profits off of selling GMOs work just as hard to obscure the facts, and it can leave you feeling like there’s nothing an individual can do to take charge of their dietary health and well-being.
Making Non-GMO Foods Easy (and Delicious)
We acknowledge that it is a tough struggle to find healthy and good-tasting food to serve your family. In the US, over 80% of the food we routinely purchase and eat contains GMOs and that includes popular cereals, snacks, cookies, lunch meats, crackers… because much of the packaged foods that is available in grocery stores contain high risk GMO ingredients.
Early on, we started working with the Non-GMO Project to make sure that all of the vegetable and herbal ingredients we use are tested and that ongoing testing is in place to identify and eliminate any possible GMO contamination. In addition, two of our products – Super Greens and Seasoned Sweet Potatoes are also USDA Organic, which adds another layer of rigorous ingredient testing and verification, helping to ensure that the vegetables are 100% organic and without and trace of GMO. We do this because we believe that all consumers deserve transparency when it comes to the ingredients in their food and should be able to choose, through easy to understand product labeling, whether or not they want to buy and eat something that has GMOs.
To make our vegetable medleys, we select only the freshest vegetables and herbs from organic family farms and then flash freeze them at their nutritional peak. Flash freezing captures not only the best taste but also preserves the maximum amount of nutrients, and guarantees that when you prepare them following the simple directions on the package, they’re going to a welcome addition to your meal and make it so much easier to get the recommended 2-3 cups of vegetables each and every day!
We’re More Than Non-GMO
In addition to banishing GMOs from our kitchen, the seasonings and spices we use are simple, yet flavorful, and add plenty of taste without extra calories, fat, sweeteners or dairy. So, if you’re following a vegan, gluten-free, or low sodium diet, you’re also going to be very happy (and maybe a bit relieved) to find our products in your grocery store’s freezer section – and with ten different vegetable medleys to choose from, you’ll never again experience boredom or the feeling that there’s “nothing good to eat”. We hope that you’re as excited as we are to be bringing healthy food back to the frozen food aisle, and that you enjoy eating our vegetable medleys as much as we do.
