If you know the Tommy’s team, you know that we’re obsessed with flavor!
When we create our veggie blends, we want to be sure that everything we do results in the best tasting and “best for you” vegetables you can find. That’s why we carefully develop unique combinations with taste, texture, and nutrients in mind. Not just the nutrients that come from pairing certain veggies, but also by carefully choosing each and every spice and herb we put into our seasoning blends – not just for maximum flavor, but also for extra nutritional oomph.
After plenty of taste testing, we found unique vegetable combinations and exciting spices that not only taste great but also have amazing health benefits. One of our favorite spices we use our hand-crafted seasoning blends, is celery seed, and we’re excited to share with you just how awesome it is.
The Health Benefits of Celery Seed
Dried celery seeds: even though they look small, they pack a seriously flavorful punch – and provide lots of health benefits, too! Read on for more information on why those tasty little seeds you see in some of your favorite Tommy’s medleys are also super good for you.
Fights Germs
Celery seed can help your body fight off certain bacteria. For example, one study of celery seeds found that they can protect against bacteria that leads to stomach ulcers in some individuals. Another study found that celery seed can fight off some bacteria, yeast, and mold strains, which suggests it might be able to be used as a natural preservative. While these benefits haven’t been tested in humans, just in labs, this research shows promise for the health benefits of celery seed.
Keeps Your Bones Healthy
Your bones need a variety of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to stay healthy. Celery seed is an easy way to get several of these nutrients into your diet and support your bones. In fact, one tablespoon of celery seed contains 12% of the recommended daily intake of calcium! It’s also rich in a lesser-known mineral, manganese, that helps your body form bone tissue and cartilage. And lastly, celery seed has magnesium and phosphorus, which protect your bones from diseases like osteoporosis.
Helps Regulate Blood Sugar
In addition to keeping your bones healthy, magnesium can also improve your blood sugar levels. Maintaining a healthy blood sugar level is essential if you want to reduce your risk of heart disease or type 2 diabetes. One tablespoon of celery seed has 12% of the recommended daily intake of magnesium, and one review even found that a diet with magnesium-high food reduced the risk of diabetes by up to 14%.
Provides Antioxidants
Antioxidants help your body prevent cell damage caused by molecules that are known as free radicals. For best health, you need a good balance of both antioxidants and free radicals. Some test-tube and animal research has shown that celery seed might have antioxidant properties because of certain compounds, called polyphenols. Polyphenols not only have antioxidant properties, but a polyphenol-rich diet has also been linked to a lower occurrence of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
Boosts Red Blood Cell Formation
Red blood cells play several important roles in the body, and in order to develop red blood cells, your body needs plenty of iron. Without a good amount of iron, you may develop an iron deficiency. A lack of iron may also cause problems with forming new red blood cells, which carry oxygen from your lungs to other parts of your body. Celery seed is a fantastic source of iron, with 17% of the recommended daily intake for men and 38% of the recommended daily intake for women in just one tablespoon.
Find Celery Seed in Tommy’s
While there are plenty of other uses for whole and ground celery seed (like when making your own pickles!), we use this spice in several of our frozen vegetable medleys. It adds a warm, earthy flavor to our veggies, without having to chop up pounds of celery stalks. Celery seed is included in our Asparagus and Kale, Broccoli Remix, Super Greens, and Vegetable Medley seasonings.
